Usual telescopes used by ordinary people are a lot smaller than those used for scientific purposes as lastly mentioned can see as far as thousands of kilometers and investigate far objects.

Galileo Galilei was the first to use the telescope for astronomical purposes. The telescope assembled by Galileo's consisted of a convex object lens and a concave eye lens, which is generally referred to as the Galilean telescope. Later on Johannes Kepler described a new kind of a telescope with two convex lenses in his book. Telescopes with that kind of a feature are commonly called the Kepler telescope.
